FIRE SAFETY TIPS

If you have a fire

  • Sound the alarm and dial 000.
  • Follow the emergency plan
  • If there is smoke, crawl low
  • Once you are outside, inform your Fire Warden

At the Office

  • Ensure your offices are cleared from flammable materials such as packaging materials. Store it in safe place away from the public.
  • Keep passage ways clear from storage and waste.
  • Service your machinery regularly.
  • Teach your staff about fire prevention and safety.
  • Train your staff on the use fire extinguishers.
  • Ensure all your fire equipment is serviced every 6 months as per the Australian Standards.

  • Secure access points when the building is unattended.
  • Install a fire alarm and have it serviced regularly.
  • Install smoke alarms .
  • Adhere to safety regulations if you have hazardous goods on the premises.
  • Have an evacuation plan and ensure all your employees know where the exits are.
  • Put your evacuation plan on the notice boards.
  • Have regular fire drills.
  • Have a contingency plan to protect and store important information.
  • Store your backup disks away from the premises.
  • Remember that smoke from a fire will make you confused.
  • Keep your insurance up to date.
  • Have a designated area for smokers and ensure they do not smoke anywhere else.
  • Make sure that broken electrical appliances are attended to immediately.
  • Do not run electrical cords over walkways.
  • Never overload extension boards.
  • Ensure fire doors are not locked or blocked.

At Home

Prevent tragedy! Small changes can make the difference between saving your loved ones or losing lives and property.

BBQ

  • Keep your BBQ grill away from anything that can burn.
  • Never leave the grill when it is lighted, especially when there are children and pets around.
  • Never use your BBQ inside an enclosed area, like your garage. This can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Never use gasoline for charcoal grills. Use a limited of starter fluid before lighting the fire.
  • Do not add any liquid fuel or re-ignite a fire.
  • Soak the coals with water before discarding them.
  • Store gas cylinders outside the home, away from structures preferably in a locked detached shed.
  • Turn the valve off if not in use.
  • Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the bottle.
  • Keep gas bottles away from children.

Boating

  • Before fueling your boat, shut down the engine and ensure no-one is smoking in the area.
  • Make sure the fueling nozzle is grounded to the intake and do not fill to capacity.
  • Wipe all fuel spills immediately.
  • Install a smoke alarm and portable extinguisher.
  • Teach your family how to use the extinguisher.
  • Use stoves and heaters only as directed by the manufacturer.

Camping

  • Don't light the campfire close to the tent.
  • Build the fire down-wind away from your tent.
  • Clear all dry vegetation away before lighting the fire.
  • Pour water over the fire before going to sleep.
  • Use only flashlights inside the tent.
  • If anyone in your party smoke, ensure they put the cigarettes out completely before discarding them.

General Tips

  • Store all pool chemicals away from the house and as per the manufacturer's instructions. Pool chemicals can spontaneously combust if it comes in contact with certain organic materials.
  • Clear all tree branches so they don't hang over your roof.
  • Install smoke alarms in your home. They save lives!
  • Have an evacuation plan and ensure everyone in the family knows it well.
  • Keep matches and lighters away from children.
  • Do not keep your stove unattended when you are cooking.
  • Don't hang clothing in front of heaters.
